Merino Mill is a popular destination in the area that boasts various eateries, such as Alino Pizzeria, The Barcelona Burger & Beer Garden, and Defined Coffee. Now, the development has announced two new restaurants coming to the area, the first of which is Picasso, which is expected to open in February 2024, according to the Charlotte Observer. Following this, the development, owned by Michal Bay, will open Copenhagen Wine & Beer Garden next summer.

Bay has been working on the new taqueria for a few years now and drew inspiration from visiting several major cities in the past several years, including Mexico, New York, Miami, Chicago, and San Francisco. As a result, Picasso will offer several signature dishes featuring tacos with Mexican and Mediterranean flavors. The restaurant is named after the Spanish painter and sculptor, who Bay calls “a very unusual artist.” As a result, the restaurant will not be an everyday eatery, with Bay telling Charlotte Observer, “We’re not going to be a usual restaurant. We are doing our homework.”

When Picasso opens early next year, it will sit next to The Barcelona Burger & Beer Garden. Customers can expect long tables, benches, and an open kitchen where guests can see their food being prepared. The entire development of Merino Mill was originally home to the original Moor Turkish Towel Company Mill, which closed back in 1999. Bay purchased the building a decade later and restored it into a go-to destination for eating and shopping.

“It’s a really unique place … so now we have turned this, within 14 years, it’s such a pleasant and fun place for people to stay,” Bay tells the Charlotte Observer.
