The new 3,000-square-foot restaurant will have indoor-outdoor seating and is expected to open in Fall 2023, according to Charlotte Observer. The Matardor offers scratch-made Mexican food and an extensive liquor section with more than 150 different tequilas, mezcals, and spirits. Co-owners Nate Opper and Zak Melang have opened locations in Oregon, Idaho, Washington, and, most recently, Charleston. The Charlotte site will be owned by Melang, a North Carolina native.

When The Matador opens in the former home of Charlotte Fire Investigations, customers can expect plenty of Mexican classics, such as burritos, enchiladas, tacos, and nachos, as well as salads and sandwiches. The restaurant uses all-natural ingredients only and sources the freshest, in-season vegetables and fruits available. The Matador takes pride in offering beautiful scratch-made cocktails crafted by an in-house mixologist. Their margarita, for example, is made with fresh, house-made sour mix. The Matador also serves its own Private Reserve Tequila—from barrels selected personally after tastings with the makers in Mexico.

“At the Matador, tequila is more than a beverage—it’s almost a culture of its own. We immerse ourselves in it. We know the landscape and the people who make a difference within it,” according to the company’s website. “We love everything about tequila, and we enjoy sharing our knowledge to help our guests appreciate it as much as we do. We serve a menu of scratch-made dishes that complement the nuances of great blancos, reposados, and añejos, with exciting preparations that re-think Mexican, always fresh ingredients and creative plate presentations. The restaurant interiors reflect the craft, heart, soul, and sense of adventure that live inside every good bottle of tequila.”
