The company submitted an application on April 18 for a “conceptual meeting” to build a 2,816-square-foot restaurant with double lane drive-thru and parking, according to a city permit filing first reported by the Charlotte Observer. If approved, the new Whataburger will move into the former home of a Circle K convenience store next to a now-closed Hardee’s. There is no exact opening date for the third Charlotte location.

Whataburger has yet to share any details regarding the other two Charlotte sites. It won’t be long before Whataburger is all over the Carolinas. The company initially announced in September 2022 that it planned to open a new location at 5301 South Boulevard, followed by another location at 12809 Albemarle Road in the Clear Creek Crossings development; the latter was approved last month for zoning permits and is expected to open next year. These three Charlotte locations are part of an overall takeover of the Carolinas. Three more locations are coming to North Carolina, including two sites in Greensboro and one in Fayetteville. In upstate South Carolina, the burger chain plans to open two locations in Spartanburg and another in Greenville and Mauldin. Finally, Whataburger is working on at least three more sites around Charleston.

“Whataburger is more than a burger chain,” according to the company’s website. “It’s a place that feels like home to more than 50,000 employees, called Family Members, and millions of customers. It’s a brand built on pride, care and love. It’s a place people count on in their communities. It’s a place where goodness lives. So now, with more than 900 Whataburger restaurants across 14 states stretching from Arizona to Florida, road-trippers and hometown folks alike continue gathering under the big orange-and-white roofs for fresh, made-to-order burgers and friendly service.”
