The company opened the location, dubbed “The Clubhouse,” in 2019 in the former NoDa Grocery Space. Since then, co-owners Ryan McKillen, Mike Salzarulo, and Ryan Owens served customers with small bites, beer cocktails, and 20 beers on tap. The group even opened a second location in South End with a pizza kitchen. Now the company will close its NoDa site to move to a new location near Optimist Hall, according to the Charlotte Observer.

There is no exact timeline for the NoDa closing and The Joinery opening. When it does open, it will sit within what is considered the city’s first “trail and transit” focused apartment building. The new Protagonist Beer location will be two stories, offering full liquor options and food, including breakfast and brunch. There will also be a private event space with a view of the uptown skyline. Protagonist Beer once considered moving into Optimism Hall before eventually opening in LoSo.

The company’s current NoDa taproom offers a wide variety of their beers, ranging from light lagers and Hefeweizen to oatmeal stouts and barrel-aged barleywine. For food, Protagonist Beer offers a good amount of appetizers, salads, pizza, and calzone. The restaurant also offers weekly and lunch specials, as well as a pizza of the month. Many of these items are expected to be found at the new location.
